Henry and Louise Volz Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established to provide a continuing legacy of education to WCJC students in remembrance of Henry and Louise Volz who taught at WCJC and in the Wharton public school system. Their efforts in the classroom to provide the best education for students in Wharton will continue in the form of this scholarship for eligible students of WCJC.

Henry and Louise touched many lives in Wharton, particularly those of their students. Until the end of their lives many of their former students told them stories of how their instruction and concern for them made a difference in their lives. This scholarship has been created to continue this legacy of making positive changes in the lives of students.

Lottie Plumb Mullins Memorial Scholarship

Lottie Plumb Mullins was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, before her family moved to Somerville, Texas. In the late 1800s, she met Albert Augustus Mullins, a local potato farmer, and they later married. The couple bought a farm in Boling, Texas, where they established a successful potato business. Ms. Mullins became a prominent businessperson and an advocate for the women's suffrage movement in the 1910s. She was deeply committed to her community and sought ways to improve the Wharton area.

In the early 1940s, Ms. Mullins and a group of Wharton County residents collaborated to establish a local educational institution, which later became Wharton County Junior College. She served as a member of the first Board of Trustees at the college, and in recognition of her contributions, the Mullins dormitory on the WCJC Wharton Campus is named in her honor.

This scholarship commemorates her legacy by providing financial support to a graduate of Boling High School who plans to attend Wharton County Junior College. It is intended for students pursuing degrees or certificates in science, mathematics, technology, engineering, medical-related fields, or business.

West Fort Bend Women's Endowed Scholarship

Formed in 2010 by Janice Gillen and Susan Cannata, the West Fort Bend Women's Charity set out to support veterans and their families.  Cannata, mother of a marine, and Gillen, mother of an Air Force JAG office and mother-in-law of an Army officer, knew the price veterans and veteran's families paid for the service of their loved ones.

Over a decade they supported Helping a Hero build specially equipped homes for injured veterans, set up an Endowed Scholarship for returning veterans at Texas A&M University as well as funding a Veteran-only study hall and a textbook lending library there to save soldiers from the high cost of textbooks.  They also contributed funding to Camp Hope for veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and helped provide a veteran with a service dog.

This scholarship is intended for a veteran, spouse, veteran's child or grandchild with preference to Fort Bend County veterans.

Bonnie Hopkins Memorial Scholarship

Bonnie Hopkins was raised in a military family. She attended schools around the globe, depending upon where her father was stationed. As a result, Bonnie developed an appreciation for different cultures around the world. Bonnie continued in her father’s footsteps by joining the army as a 2nd Lieutenant. After serving her country, she taught English at the University of North Carolina and then at Saint Phillips College in San Antonio. Bonnie fought a courageous battle against myeloma before she passed in June 2006. She truly believed in education, which is why her family has worked with the West Fort Bend Women’s Charity to establish this scholarship in her memory.

This scholarship is intended for a veteran, spouse, veteran's child or grandchild with preference to Fort Bend County veterans.
