The Wharton County Junior College Foundation is proud to announce the establishment of the West Fort Bend Women’s Endowed Scholarship.  This scholarship, generously donated by the West Fort Bend Women’s Charity, will benefit students pursuing academic degrees from Wharton County Junior College.

Janice Gillen and Susan Cannata presented this gift on behalf of the West Fort Bend Women’s Charity to the WCJC Foundation.  This scholarship will be awarded to students who are veterans, relatives of veterans or Fort Bend County residents, beginning with the upcoming 2024-25 academic year.  To apply for the scholarship, applicants may visit the Foundation’s scholarship website (wcjcfoundation.awardspring.com) or contact the Financial Aid office at Wharton County Junior College.

The WCJC Foundation President Suzanne Armour praised the scholarship. “We are thrilled to be able to support our WCJC students, veterans, and the residents of Fort Bend with this scholarship,” Armour said. “We are honored with the trust shown by the staff at the West Fort Bend Women’s Charity and we look forward to awarding this scholarship for many years to come.”

Formed in 2010 by Janice Gillen and Susan Cannata, the West Fort Bend Women’s Charity set out to support veterans and their families.  Cannata, the mother of a Marine, and Gillen, the mother of an Air Force JAG Officer and mother-in-law of an Army Officer, know the price veterans and their families pay for the service of their loved ones.   The West Fort Bend Women’s Charity has spent more than a decade supporting veteran and education causes, including funding a veteran-only study hall and textbook lending library at Texas A&M University.

The Foundation’s Director, Jonathan Jeter, recognized the scholarship. “We are pleased to support all of the students of WCJC, including veterans, their families and the residents of Fort Bend County as they pursue their academic dreams.”  Jeter said. “We are grateful for the relationship and support from our community, including the West Fort Bend Women’s Charity through their support of students.”

The Wharton County Junior College Foundation, a 501(C)(3) non-profit whose mission is to provide educational awareness and financial support to Wharton County Junior College, has been expanding their outreach and impact over the past few years. This includes the introduction of several community events, an increase in scholarships awarded and community engagement, and completing a Fine Arts Drive in 2023.

The WCJC Foundation Office is located on the Wharton campus inside the J. M. Hodges Library.  For additional information on the Foundation or to learn how to support their mission visit wcjcfoundation.org or contact Jonathan Jeter at jeterj@wcjc.edu or 979-532-6981.
