The Wharton County Junior College Foundation is proud to announce they have awarded $96,000 in scholarships to students from its service area. Twenty-four students were selected from Wharton, Boling, East Bernard, Needville, El Campo, Louise, Bay City, and Tidehaven high schools and each will receive $4,000 toward their education at WCJC.
The Foundation began this scholarship program in 2017, and this year increased the number of scholarships by including additional scholarships open to students from other counties in its service area. The total number of scholarships awarded changed from 18 to 24 due to the significant need in these communities and the growing difficulty for families to afford the costs of higher education.
“We are so pleased to be able to increase our support for student scholarships, because we know the future impact that these students will have on our community.” said Suzanne Armour, who serves as the President of the WCJC Foundation’s Board of Directors. “We know these students will continue to do amazing things, and are proud to continue to support them in their academic pursuits.”
The 2023 scholarship recipients include:
The purpose of these scholarships is to provide assistance for students who need further support to pursue higher education. The WCJC Foundation, whose mission is to provide educational awareness and financial support to Wharton County Junior College, continues to expand its outreach and impact. In addition to the increase in awarded scholarships, this includes several new community events and an increased social media presence, community engagement and awareness of Foundation scholarships and the opportunities to give.
The scholarships were celebrated by the Foundation’s Director, Jonathan Jeter. “We are honored to continue our support of students in the community and we congratulate these students for their achievement,” Jeter said. “Thank you to our generous donors who continue to support the Foundation’s mission, and to our Board of Directors who have prioritized the support of student scholarships.”
To qualify for the scholarships, applicants were required to have been a high school graduate within the Wharton County Junior College’s service area. In addition, they had to complete a scholarship application, including an essay. Priority was given to students who demonstrated how a scholarship would enable them to overcome financial constraints in order to attend Wharton County Junior College.
The WCJC Foundation Office is located on Wharton campus, located inside the J. M. Hodges Library. For more information on ways to give to the Foundation or to learn how you can support this effort visit wcjcfoundation.org or contact Jonathan Jeter at jeterj@wcjc.edu or 979-532-6981.
